Qualitative Approaches to Research

This presentation will discuss the fundaments, advantages and shortcomings of qualitative research strategies. Drawing on examples, it will address how several qualitative techniques may be used and integrated within different methodological designs. The strengths and complementarity of such techniques will also be discussed.

José Pedro Silva completed a degree in Sociology at the Faculty of Arts of University of Porto (2005) and a PhD in Sociology, speciality in Sociology of Environment and Territory, at the Institute of Social Sciences of University of Lisbon (2014). He worked in several research projects in the domains of Sociology and Information Science and co-authored a number of scientific articles, books and reports. He is currently a researcher at the Institute of Public Health of University of Porto, working within the “DOCnet - Diabetes & obesity at the crossroads between Oncological and Cardiovascular diseases – a system analysis NETwork towards precision medicine” project.
