People in prison share the same right to health and well-being as everyone else. When a state deprives people of their liberty it has a special duty to care for their health. This presentation intents to explain the organization and main activities of the Portuguese Prison Health Services.

Portuguese Probation and Prison Service – Prison Hospital


Erica Grilo Cardoso is a pharmacist and since 2016 Director of the Portuguese Prison Hospital of the Portuguese Probation and Prison Services.

With more than 18 years of professional experience, Erica Cardoso worked as Good Manufacturing Inspector at INFARMED, I.P. performing inspections to manufactures of human medicinal products and active pharmaceutical ingredients in Portugal and overseas, wholesalers (GDP) and other agents in the medicines circuit, since raw materials to finished products, inspections to hospital pharmacies, ensure activities related to quality defects and rapid alert notifications, technical and scientific advice to scientific projects in cellular therapy area  as well as representation of INFARMED at national and international level.

Since 2009 Erica Grilo Cardoso as joined the Portuguese Probation and Prison Services as a deputy governor of the Prison Hospital. From 2011 to 2016 worked as Head of Health Management Department managing and coordinating all relevant activities and resources contributing to the health and well-being of inmates.
