Luis Ruano is a Neurology medical resident at the Entre Douro e Vouga Hospital Centre and a PhD Student in Public Health at the University of Porto Medical School (FMUP). He was born in 1984 in Bragança. In 2012, he obtained his Master of Public Health (FMUP) with the thesis “The Epidemiology of Hereditary ataxias and spastic paraplegias in Portugal”.
He has published 9 papers in peer-reviewed international papers and presented 6 oral communications at international conferences and 20 at Portuguese conferences. He worked as assistant teacher of Epidemiology at the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the Porto University from 2012 to 2014.
He is interested in understanding and modifying the natural history and the determinants of cognitive deterioration in neurodegenerative diseases and multiple sclerosis. He is currently working in the development of a new computer-based approach for more sensitive and cost effective cognitive testing, allowing for a timely diagnosis and new management strategies for cognitive impairment.
