The EPITeen project - Epidemiological Health Investigation of Teenagers in Porto – started in 2003. The study aims to understand how behaviours and habits acquired in adolescence will impact adult health. The participants were adolescents born in 1990, attending public and private schools in Porto in the 2003/2004 academic year.
The 2942 participants were evaluated at 13, at 17 and at 21 years of age and will be followed throughout life. Currently they are being evaluated for the fourth time. In each evaluation, a multidisciplinary team of health professionals collects information through questionnaires and performs objective measurements, such as blood pressure, weight and height, evaluation of respiratory function and bone mineral density. Blood analyses are also performed.
Based on data collected in the EPITeen project, we provide essential information for health promotion planning and we have been able to answer several scientific goals through the publication of papers in peer-reviewed national and international journals.
