In 2012, ISPUP was responsible for the constitution of a cohort of 506 breast cancer patients proposed for surgical treatment at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology of Porto. Participants were followed for the first year after diagnosis and after 3 years, and an evaluation corresponding to 5 years of follow-up is underway. The main objectives of the project are related to the assessment of the frequency of neurological complications of cancer or its treatments, including neuropathic pain, polyneuropathy secondary to chemotherapy or cognitive decline. The cohort was the basis of a project funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology - Portugal, several doctoral theses (two of which have already been completed or awaiting public defense), three completed master's dissertations and ten publications in international scientific journals.
