Activity outline:

The fellow will integrate the Clinical Epidemiology and Outcomes Research Group. He/she will run a project, based on the extraction and data analysis in order to describe the patterns of use of specific medicines, namely antibiotics, during hospitalization, and quantify the impact of specific therapeutic choices on clinical outcomes and costs.

 

Academic and professional requirements:

MANDATORY

  • Doctoral (PhD) in Public Health Sciences, Health Services and Outcomes Research, Comparative Effectiveness, Health Economics and Management or equivalent;
  • Broad understanding and autonomy in performing statistical and cost-effectiveness analysis methodologies; the candidates must demonstrate in the CV and during the interview the ability to implement the activity outlined above;
  • Professional experience in health services research/epidemiology;
  • Fluency in Portuguese at working level (B1) and ability to write and to speak English fluently documented by corresponding diploma.

 

DESIRABLE

  • Knowledge in the field of clinical epidemiology and public health, patient safety and quality of care
  • Familiarity with the International Classification of Diseases and the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Classification for medicines;
  • Publication track record – publication as first author of 2 or more manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals with impact factor
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel, or equivalent
  • Interpersonal/ communication skills, including medical and scientific terminologies

 

Workplace: Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto, Porto, Portugal. Supervision by Doutora Ana Azevedo.

 

Duration and Stipend: The grant will have an initial duration of 12 months, with a possible extension up to 6 years, with an expected starting date in April/May 2016. Financial aspects are in accordance with the FCT regulations (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores), which assigns a tax-free stipend of 1495€ per month (12 months a year).

On 21st of March 2016 the selection Jury (Ana Azevedo, Sofia Correia and Raquel Lucas) of the above mentioned PhD scholarship position met at the Institute of Public Health University of Porto in order define the selection process criteria. The Jury decided to establish three selection phases:

 

 

  1. Compliance with the admission requirements, as defined in the announcement
  2. Existence of all documents required (Curriculum vitae, academic degree certification and motivation letter)
  3. Mandatory academic and professional requirements:
    1. Doctoral (PhD) in Public Health Sciences, Health Services and Outcomes Research, Comparative Effectiveness, Health Economics and Management or equivalent;
    2. Broad understanding and autonomy in performing statistical and cost-effectiveness analysis methodologies (evidenced by a scientific article or technical report in which the candidate had a central participation using these methodologies or describing the main methodologies used) – the candidates must demonstrate in the CV the ability to implement the activity described in the announcement;
    3. Professional experience in health services research/epidemiology
    4. Fluency in Portuguese at working level (B1) and ability to write and to speak English fluently documented by corresponding diploma.

 

Candidates will be disqualified if one of the mentioned above criteria (a. and/or b.) is not met.

 

  1. Curriculum vitae evaluation (CE) - maximum score of 20 points as the sum of each criterion:
  2. Knowledge on the field of clinical epidemiology and public health (maximum 5 points), patient safety and quality of care (maximum 3 points), part of training courses or evidenced in professional experience
  3. Familiarity with the International Classification of Diseases and the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Classification for medicines (maximum 3 points);
  4. Knowledge of other statistical techniques beyond those described as mandatory (maximum 3 points)
  5. Publication track record – number of papers as first or senior author in peer-reviewed journals with impact factor (2 manuscripts = 1 point; 3-5 manuscripts=2 points; >5 manuscripts = 3 points)
  6. Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel, or equivalent, evidenced by training courses or stating the knowledge on less used formulas (ifsum and junk), pivot tables or vlookups (maximum 3 points).

 

Candidates with less than 10 points will not be admitted for interview.

 

  1. Interview (I) – maximum score of 20 points

For candidates with 10 or more points in the curriculum evaluation a face-to-face or videoconference interview will be scheduled. If more than 5 candidates are eligible, those five with the highest curriculum evaluation scores will be admitted.

The interview score will be the sum of each criterion:

  1. Ability to conceptualize intervention strategies to deal with real problems (maximum 6 points)
  2. Ability to describe previous work on the requested areas (maximum 4 points)
  3. Ability to demonstrate knowledge on the requested fields (maximum 4 points)
  4. Good interpersonal/ communication skills (maximum 4 points)
  5. Fluency in Portuguese (maximum 2 points)

 

 

Each member of the Jury will score the candidate; final interview classification will be the result of the arithmetic average of the Jury scores.

 Maximum score of 20 points based on the formula:

 

FC = [Curriculum Evaluation (CE) + Interview (I)] / 2

 

The candidate with the highest score will be selected.

On the 12th of May 2016, the selection Jury (Ana Azevedo, Sofia Correia and Raquel Lucas) of the above mentioned PhD scholarship position met in order to classify the Curriculum vitae of the candidates, according to the previously defined criteria.

 

Six candidates applied to the position. After analysis of the documentation, including the academic and professional eligibility requirements, four candidates were excluded because: a) no doctoral position in the required fields and/or b) no mandatory professional experience.

The two eligible candidates were evaluated and both were admitted to a face-to-face or videoconference interview. Final classification is presented in the following table and detailed description is available in the file attached to this document.
