A position is available within the scientific area of Healthcare Quality Improvement at the Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto (Ref. BINT2017002).

The Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto – ISPUP – is devoted to create and disseminate high quality information and competitive knowledge in the broad field of public health. ISPUP promotes solid interaction among experienced researchers from complementary scientific fields and actively stimulates networking among relevant regional, national and international institutions with a dynamic exchange of clinical and population-based scientific information. As part of its strategic plan a hospital epidemiology group was launched that later engaged in a strong cooperation with Centro Hospitalar de São João, the largest hospital structure in the North of Portugal. http://ispup.up.pt

 

Activity outline:

The fellow will be part of the hospital epidemiology team. He/she will be responsible for the evaluation of previously implemented projects and to delineate and implement new quality improvement intervention strategies.

 

 

Academic and professional requirements:

 

MANDATORY

  • Master Degree in Health Services Management or equivalent;
  • Professional experience on the field of clinical epidemiology, health services research, outcomes research, patient safety or quality of care
  • Fluency in Portuguese at working level (B1) and ability to speak and write in English documented by corresponding diploma or scientific papers as the first author

 

 

DESIRABLE

  • Experience in the hospital field, namely in the development of quality improvement interventions or definition and interpretation of quality indicators
  • Broad understanding of statistical methodologies and techniques
  • Experience in using hospital datasets (administrative and others)
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel, or equivalent
  • Interpersonal/ communication skills, including medical and scientific terminologies
  • Publication track record – publication of 1 or more manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals with impact factor

 

 

Workplace: Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto, Porto, Portugal. Supervision by Doutora Ana Azevedo.

 

Duration and Stipend: The grant will have an initial duration of 12 months, with a possible extension, with an expected starting date in September/October 2017. Financial aspects are in accordance with the FCT regulations (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores), which assigns a tax-free stipend of 980€ per month (12 months a year).

Evaluation criteria and process: Curricular evaluation of all eligible candidates + interview (possibly by videoconference) with a maximum of six candidates. The final results of the evaluation will be posted in ISPUP’s website (http://ispup.up.pt/training-positions/scholarships/open-positions/

MINUTES OF THE FIRST MEETING OF THE JURY FOR THE SELECTION PROCESS OF ONE HEALTHCARE QUALITY IMPROVEMENT RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP AT THE INSTITUTE OF PUBLIC HEALTH OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PORTO - ISPUP (REF: BINT2017002)

  

On 10th August 2017 the selection Jury (Ana Azevedo, Sofia Correia and Sílvia Fraga) of the above mentioned Research Scholarship position met in order define the selection process criteria. The Jury decided to establish three selection phases:

 

  1. Compliance with the admission requirements, as defined in the announcement

a. Existence of all documents required (Curriculum vitae, academic degree certification and motivation letter)

b. Mandatory academic and professional requirements:

i. Master Degree in Health Services Management or equivalent;

ii. Professional experience on the field of clinical epidemiology, health services research, outcomes research, patient safety or quality of care

iii. Fluency in Portuguese at working level (B1) and ability to speak and write in English documented by corresponding diploma or scientific papers as the first author

 

Candidates will be disqualified if one of the mentioned above criteria (a. and/or b.) is not met.

 

  1. Curriculum vitae evaluation (CE) - maximum score of 20 points as the sum of each criterion:

a. Experience in hospital quality improvement strategies (maximum 5 points)

b. Experience in the definition and interpretation of indicators (maximum 4 points)

c. Experience in using hospital datasets (administrative and others) (maximum 4 points)

d. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, or equivalent (maximum 3 points)

e. Broad understanding of statistical methodologies and techniques (maximum 2 points)

f. Publication track record (1 manuscript in peer-reviewed journals with impact factor = 1 point; >1 manuscripts=2 points)

 

Candidates with less than 10 points will not be admitted for interview.

 

  1. Interview (I) – maximum score of 20 points

For candidates with 10 or more points in the curriculum evaluation a face-to-face or videoconference interview will be scheduled. If more than 6 candidates are eligible, those six with the highest curriculum evaluation scores will be admitted.

The interview score will be the sum of each criterion:

a. Ability to describe previous work on the requested areas (maximum 4 points)

b. Ability to demonstrate knowledge on the requested fields (maximum 4 points)

c. Ability to conceptualize strategies to deal with real problems (maximum 4 points)

d. Good use of medical and scientific terminologies (maximum 4 points)

e. Good interpersonal/ communication skills (maximum 4 points)

 

Each member of the Jury will score the candidate; final interview classification will be the result of the arithmetic average of the Jury scores.

 

Candidates’ Final Classification (FC)

 Maximum score of 20 points based on the formula:

FC = [Curriculum Evaluation (CE) + Interview (I)] / 2

 

The candidate with the highest score will be selected.

MINUTES OF THE SECOND MEETING OF THE JURY FOR THE SELECTION PROCESS OF ONE HEALTHCARE QUALITY IMPROVEMENT RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP AT THE INSTITUTE OF PUBLIC HEALTH OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PORTO - ISPUP (REF: BINT2017002)

 

On the 14th of September 2017, the selection Jury (Ana Azevedo, Sofia Correia and Sílvia Fraga) of the above mentioned scholarship position met in order to classify the Curriculum vitae of the candidates, according to the previously defined criteria.


Seven candidates applied to the position. After analysis of the documentation, including the academic and professional eligibility requirements, five candidates were excluded because: a) no master degree in the required fields and/or b) no mandatory professional experience and/or c) no fluency in Portuguese at working level (B1).

The seven eligible candidates were evaluated and four were admitted to a face-to-face or videoconference interview. Final classification is presented in the following table and detailed description is available in the file attached to this document.

On the 19th September 2017 the selection Jury (Ana Azevedo, Sofia Correia and Sílvia Fraga) of the above mentioned scholarship position met in order to proceed to the candidates’ interviews, according to the previously defined criteria.
