The seminar will provide an overview of the cultural and legal origins of violence committed against women. The seminar will also present evidence on the impacts of improved state capacity in addressing pro-active behaviors relating to addressing violence against women in India and the UK.
Sofia Amaral is an Economist at the Center for Labor Economics of the ifo Institute at the University of Munich. Sofia is also a CESifo Research Affiliate and an affiliate of the Center for Crime, Justice, and Policing of the University of Birmingham, UK. Previously Sofia completed a Ph.D. in Economics at the University of Birmingham, UK and a Post-Doc at the University of Essex, UK. Sofia's research interests include Development Economics, Family Economics and Economics of Crime. Her work is focused on the causes of violence against women and what type of interventions are effective in preventing it. The focus of Sofia's research has been India, UK, and Mozambique. Currently she holdes a Leibniz Junior Research Groups Grant under the project "The Economics of Violence Against Women: Understanding Causes and Identifying Remedies".
