Barbara Barbosa Neves (PhD) is an Associate Professor in Sociology at Monash University, Australia. She is a sociologist of technology, focusing on ageing and emerging technologies. Her recent research explores the role of VR, social robots, and AI in later life, as well as co-designed technology-based interventions to help address loneliness among older people living alone or in aged-care facilities. Prior to moving to Australia, Barbara was an Associate Director of the 'Technologies for Aging Gracefully Lab' (TAGlab), Department of Computer Science, University of Toronto, Canada. At TAGlab, she led interdisciplinary teams designing and evaluating digital technologies with/for frail older people living in long-term care homes.
Barbara’s research has been published in a range of top tier Sociology and Computer Science (HCI) journals/venues. Her research has also been featured in CBC, TVO, ABC, SBS, The Conversation, and The Age. She has received awards in North America, Japan, Europe, and Australia. In 2019, she was named among the ABC Top 5 Humanities and Social Science Scholars in Australia for the ABC Top 5 Media Program.
