Joana Rafael

Joana Rafael (1979) Architect-Researcher.

Member of the Laboratory for Integrative and Translational Research in Population Health (ITR) Epidemiology of Allergic Conditions of the Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto (ISPUP), coordinated by Professor André Moreira.

Completed a PhD in Visual Cultures (2017) and an MRes in Research Architecture (2009) at Goldsmiths, University of London (both with support from the FCT), an Ma in Urban Culture (2008) from the Centre for Contemporary Culture, Barcelona, and a degree in Architecture (2002) from the University of Minho, Guimarães.

Lectured at Central Saint Martins, London (2010-15), the University of Creative Arts, Canterbury (2012-15), and the Institute of Educational Sciences of the Douro, Penafiel (2017-20).

Teaches at the Curatorial, Urban Culture and Spatial Practices post-graduation programme held by the Artistic School of Porto.

Works between architecture and (issues of) ecology, focusing causes and solutions to pollution and contamination problems.
