Maria João Bessa holds a Master’s degree in Bioengineering, with a specialization in Molecular Biotechnology from the Faculty of Engineering/Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar at University of Porto (2015).
Along her studies, she became very interested in Nanotechnology, particularly in nanomaterials unique properties and wide range of applications. As an undergraduate student, she had the opportunity to join the research group leaded by Professor João Paulo Teixeira, at the National Institute of Health Doutor Ricardo Jorge, where she participated in different projects in the (nano)toxicology field. During her career, she gained hands-on experience in cell culture and in vitro toxicology methodologies. She has already been involved in several European Projects, all related to nanotoxicology, including the ERA-NET SIINN NanoToxClass (ERA-SIINN/0001/2013) and CERASAFE (SIINN/0004/2014). As a result of her research activities, she presented data at national and Internalstional scientific conferences, and several publications have been produced.
She has been awarded with a PhD scholarship (SFRH/BD/120646/2016) from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), also in the field of nanotoxicology, under the framework of the CERASAFE project.
