Every year worldwide about 350 000 women die from pregnancy and childbirth related causes and an estimated three and a half to four million babies die in the first four weeks of life.
MOMI (Missed Opportunities in Maternal and Infant Health: reducing maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity in the year after childbirth through combined facility- and community-based interventions) addresses critical issues in maternal and newborn health by focusing on improving the postpartum health care for mothers and newborns.
MOMI will help to define the optimum package of postpartum interventions required to improve maternal and newborn health and – through its ongoing policy outcomes – impact on overall maternal and child mortality, thus contributing to Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5.
The package of interventions developed through MOMI will target newborn health and women in the early postpartum period and throughout the first year after childbirth. This package will be delivered through a combined facility- and community-based approach designed to integrate services and strengthen health systems. It will be implemented in four African countries (Burkina Faso, Kenya, Malawi and Mozambique) by a consortium of five African and three European partners.
MOMI started the 1st of February 2011 and will run during 5 years until the 31st of January 2016.
MOMI is funded by the European Community’s Seventh Framework Programme [FP7/2007-2013; call FP7-AFRICA-2010 for collaborative projects], under grant agreement n° 265448.
The project aims to add to global knowledge about how postpartum services could be more effectively organized, both at facility and community level, to improve maternal and newborn health.
