Marianela Ferreira was born in 1966 in Angola. Her first degree was in Social Work and she has a Master’s degree in Social Work Sciences. She obtained a Doctorate in Sociology with a thesis on “Representations and Practices of Age Management in Groups of Health Professionals – a case study of doctors and nurses in the Porto district”. She is the founder of a company providing social care. Until 2008 she taught at the Education Institute in Porto (Escola Superior de Educação do Porto).
She has a position as researcher at ISPUP (Instituto de Saúde Publica do Porto da Faculdade de Medicina) and also works with the Sociology Institute at the Facultly of Arts, University of Porto (Instituto de Sociologia da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto. Her areas of research include Aging, Transition to Retirement and Health, with a number of publications both national and international, and also chapters of scientific books. She is a member of a number of associations: The European Network for Safety among Elderly (EUNESE); the Federación Espanõla de Sociologia (FES-Spain); Associação Portuguesa de Sociologia (APS- Portugal); the European Sociological Association (ESA).
