Joana Amaro graduated in Nursing in 2007. After working in a Renal Unit at St Luke’s Hospital (Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust), UK, she joined the Occupational Health Unit of the University of Porto in 2010.


In 2013, she obtained a Master of Science in Epidemiology from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto with the thesis "Patterns of breast cancer mortality trends in Europe".


She is currently a FCT PhD fellow  in the Doctoral Programme in Global Public Health, University of Porto and Nova University of Lisbon, with the project entitled "Work-related injuries and diseases: a worker-based approach".
