On October 4th, at 2:00 pm, Elsa Giugliani will present a seminar entitled: “Contribution of Academia to public policies on breastfeeding in Brazil: experience of a researcher from southern Brazil”.
The presentation aims to highlight the importance of Academia in the development, implementation and evaluation of public health policies. It will be developed in two parts: (1) presentation of the public policies for the promotion, protection and support of breastfeeding in Brazil, under the coordination of the Ministry of Health, internationally recognized; and (2) examples of research directly related to these policies developed with the participation of a researcher from southern Brazil.
Elsa Giugliani short bio:
Elsa Giugliani is a medical doctor, pediatrician, MsC in Child and Adolescent Health from the University of São Paulo, MsC in Maternal and Child Health from the University of London, PhD in Child and Adolescent Health from the University of São Paulo and postdoctoral degree from The Johns Hopkins University. International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) since 1993. Currently she is a full professor of the Department of Pediatrics at the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, working in the postgraduate course in Child and Adolescent Health. Occasional consultant to the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization. Member of the Scientific Department of Breastfeeding of the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics and in the National Breastfeeding Committee of the Ministry of Health in different administrations. She was the Coordinator of the Department of Child Health of the Brazilian Ministry of Health (2007-20111). Her area of main interest in research is Maternal and Child Health, with emphasis on breastfeeding and infant feeding. She published more than 150 scientific papers, 11 books, 81 chapters of books and supervised 35 master’s dissertations and 16 doctoral theses”. She is mother of 3 “children” and grandmother of 5.
