Maria João Novais has a Master’s Degree in Biochemistry applied to Biomedicine from the University of Minho. She began her career at the Institut de Biochimie et de Génétique Cellulaires (IBGC), CNRS at the Université Bordeaux Segalen, in the research project on Molecular mechanisms linking the phosphorylation of the protein Bax to its activation during Apoptosis, whose main function consisted in design and organization of laboratory experiments, data processing and writing of scientific content. In 2017, as a research fellow at ISPUP, she worked as a researcher in the Geração 21 project, collecting information on the growth and habits of project participants.
In 2020, became part of the field work team of the program “Serological Tests for the search of specific antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 virus aimed at workers and students at the University of Porto”, performing functions as coordinator of the field team, and database management and correction. Since June 2021, performed functions as Technician to support the project “Porto, Cidade sem Sida”, contributing to the management and analysis of data and production of reports for the Lisbon Cohort of Men who have Sex with man, and for the Rede de Rastreio Comunitário.
