The Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto (ISPUP) welcomes national and international researchers, trainees, and students interested in conducting short-term research stays. Visits to ISPUP are temporary, do not establish formal ties with the institution and can be arranged at any time of the year.

ISPUP coordinates the Associated Laboratory for Integrative and Translational Research in Population Health (ITR), which includes the EPIUnit – Epidemiology Research Unit, a research and development (R&D) unit that fosters collaborations among researchers with various academic backgrounds and professional experiences, where short-term research stays are possible.

Types of positions for national and international visitors

Researchers

Researchers and Professors from other institutions who wish to network with researchers, collaborate on research projects or participate in academic activities.

Period: minimum of 5 days, maximum of 12 months.

Academic Internships

Academic internships are aimed at students looking to gain practical experience in their field of study, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge in a real research context. These internships are carried out as part of a curricular unit of a bachelor's or master's degree programme.

Period: minimum of 3 months, maximum of 12 months.

Visiting Students

Students from other institutions who wish to conduct an exchange, learn specific skills in the field of epidemiology and public health research, develop a work plan, or participate in research projects.

Period: minimum of 1 month, maximum of 12 months.

Professional Internships

Professional internships are intended for professionals in training who need practical experience for their professional qualification.
Requests for professional internships will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and accepted only if all conditions are safeguarded.

Period: minimum of 3 months, maximum of 12 months.

To apply for a short-term research stay, please follow the steps below. Note that each visitor will have an assigned supervisor to oversee their work. If you have already established contact with a potential supervisor, please indicate this in the application form. Otherwise, the person coordinating the chosen research line may assign a supervisor based on your cover letter and research interests. Required Documents, to be submitted in the form:

         Curriculum Vitae including phone and email contact (maximum of 2 pages).

          Letter/declaration of support from the home institution.

          Letter of support from the ISPUP researcher who will supervise the research stay (if applicable).

Submission Deadline: applications can be submitted at any time. However, the review time for each application is approximately 4 to 6 weeks. It is advisable to submit the application at least three months before the intended start date of the visit.

Aspects to be considered

Please note that ISPUP does not provide funding or scholarships for internships and research stays; all travel, accommodation, and subsistence expenses must be financed by external sources or guaranteed personal funds.
