Alberto Caldas Afonso

Alberto Caldas Afonso received his degree and PhD from the Faculty of Medicine of Porto and his MBA in Health Economics in 2002 from the Catholic University of Porto.

He is currently Full Professor and Course Director of the Integrated Master’s Degree in Medicine at the Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar.

His main scientific areas of interest are kidney diseases, diabetic nephropathy, and molecular mechanisms of disease progression and renal protection.

He is also a Portuguese Member of the World Medical Association, the Ibero-American Forum of Medical Entities, and the Standing Committee of European Physicians. He is involved in many clinical trials and has published numerous articles in international journals addressing a wide variety of topics related to pediatric nephrology.

Alberto Caldas Afonso leads the research group on “Early Cardiometabolic Risk and Vascular Injury – Impact on the Kidney”from the Laboratory for Integrative and Translational Research in Population Health (ITR).
