She is the first woman to hold the position of President of the Portuguese Association of Epidemiology (APE). Elisabete Ramos, researcher at the Instituto de Saúde Pública da Universidade do Porto (ISPUP), assumed the position of President of this scientific Association, on September 16th.
In a session organized in a digital format, the new APE governing body took office, and Elisabete Ramos assumed the position for a three-year term (2020-2022), succeeding Jorge Torgal.
The researcher, who now leads the Association that represents epidemiologists scientifically at the national level, believes that “the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about more visibility to epidemiologists´ work” and that “the APE´s actions and its associates will be further strengthened”.
Created in 1988, APE includes about 250 registered epidemiologists and aims to “promote the study, discussion and dissemination of the application and progress of epidemiology in the perspective of the development of health sciences”.
About Elisabete Ramos
She completed a Nutrition Sciences degree from the Universidade do Porto in 1997, followed by a Master in Public Health with a specialization in Epidemiology in 2001, and a doctorate in Public Health in 2006 from the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade do Porto.
She is an assistant professor at the Faculdade de Medicina da U.Porto, since 2007, and is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Master in Health Education.
Elisabete Ramos has developed research in national and international projects, mostly in the area of behavioral determinants in health, namely those related to obesity.
Her research has focused on the study of the dynamics of adiposity between adolescence and adulthood.
Approximately 100 scientific publications in international journals have been published as a result of her research work.
