Promoted by amateur triathlete Tiago Valente, who turned his personal battle against depression into a mission, the movement aims to inspire others to seek help without fear of judgment, addressing the social barriers that often prevent people from reaching out for support. This initiative seeks to break the silence that still surrounds depression, particularly among men, who, despite being diagnosed less frequently than women, face a risk of suicide up to five times higher.
The initiative will be officially launched with an event at the Public Health Institute of the University of Porto (ISPUP), featuring the presentation of the eBook “Turning Silent Battles into Loud Victories – A Story of Overcoming and Mental Health”, which documents Tiago Valente’s personal journey. This publication will be presented across the country and will accompany the athlete’s preparation for one of the world’s most challenging triathlons – the PATAGONMAN.
The event will also feature a roundtable discussion with a panel of experts, including Ricardo Gusmão, coordinator of the Laboratory of Mental Health Literacy, Wellbeing, Depression and Suicide Prevention, João Bessa, President of the Portuguese Society of Psychiatry and Mental Health, Ana Matos Pires, representing the National Coordination of Mental Health Policies and Francisco Sampaio, representing the Regional Coordination of Mental Health.
