Inês Azevedo was born in Porto, in 1958. She studied at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto (FMUP), from 1976 to 1982. She taught Immunology from 1981 to 1985 and teaches Paediatrics since 1989 at FMUP. She was resident in Paediatrics at Centro Hospitalar S. João, in Oporto, from 1986-91, and a research fellow at the paediatric department of Hôpital Necker-Enfants Malades, in Paris, from 1989-90. She passed her national board exams in paediatrics in 1982. She finished her PhD in1986 with a research project in bronchoalveolar lavage in wheezy infants, after a two years fellowship at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, from 1992-94. She is Professor in Paediatrics at FMUP since then. Her clinical work is mainly performed in the Pulmonology and Allergology Unit of the Paediatric Department of Centro Hospitalar S. João, in Oporto, where she launched several diagnostic tools. She has developed research in national and international projects, in areas related to respiratory diseases in children, and published more then 25 scientific papers in international journals, that were cited 389 times by July 2014 (Web of Knowledge). From 2007 onwards she is a member of the board of the Paediatric Portuguese Society and the liaison member to the European Academy of Paediatrics. She is an active member of the Paediatric Bronchology Group of the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and participated in several taskforces, including the Committee on Paediatric Respiratory Training in Europe, and the Hermes Project. From 2013-14 she was an expert reviewer of the ERS Fellowships Program and since October 2014 is one of the twelve members of the ERS Fellowships & Awards Working Group.
