Ana Isabel Ribeiro, born in Porto in 1988, is an epidemiologist and health geographer. After completing her Bachelor’s degree in Geography at the University of Porto in 2008, with a focus on the intersection of geography and health, Ana obtained her Master’s in Public Health in 2010 and a PhD in Public Health in 2016 from the University of Porto’s Faculty of Medicine, supported by a grant from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
Following the completion of her PhD, from 2016 to 2019, Ana worked as a Research Assistant at the Institute of Public Health at the University of Porto (ISPUP), contributing to the European project LIFEPATH, funded by Horizon 2020.
In 2020, Ana secured a researcher position with a contract from the FCT under the Stimulus for Individual Scientific Employment program.
Since 2019, she has been the leader and founder of the Lab Health and Territory where she directs a research program focused on urban and environmental health. Specifically, this research line assesses geographical disparities in health and explores the impact of the neighbourhood’s social and biophysical features on people’s health.
Ana has authored more than 130 publications and has led various collaborative research projects on urban and environmental health, including Ageing and Place, EXALAR, HUG and MOVE-AIR. She has also participated in several European projects and COST actions.
In addition, Ana holds the position of Invited Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine (University of Porto), where she is actively involved in teaching and supervision. She also serves as Scientific Coordinator for ISPUP Training, Member of the Executive Committee of the Generation XXI cohort, Geospatial Data Manager and Analyst for ISPUP’s cohorts, and is a member of ISPUP’s WHO (World Health Organization) Collaborating Center.
Ana is also engaged in scientific editing. Since 2024, she has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Swiss School of Public Health (SSPH+) Journal Public Health Reviews, following five years as Senior Editor. Since 2022, she has also held the position of Associate Editor at the Journal Scientific Reports.
