ISPUP researcher awarded at the international symposium on environmental pollution

Joana Madureira, a researcher at the Instituto de Saúde Pública da Universidade do Porto (ISPUP), was awarded the Best Scientific Presentation, at the 20th International Symposium on Environmental Pollution and its Impact on Life in the Mediterranean Region, which took place on the 26th and 27th of October 2020.

The prize was attributed to the work Age-related dose deposition of particulate matter in human respiratory tract: findings from a birth cross-sectional study in Portugal, which showed that continued exposure to particulate matter – one of the most serious air pollutants in terms of public health – inside homes, may pose health risks, particularly to children’s health.

This work, carried out within the scope of the international project NeoGene, coordinated by the researcher Carla Costa of ISPUP and INSA-Porto, includes data from two original scientific articles already published. The work also counted on the collaboration of other researchers from INSA-Porto and the Faculty of Engineering of the Universidade do Porto.

“This is a very important international recognition that reflects our scientific capacity, as well as the potential to develop high quality and internationally competitive science”, says the award-winning researcher.

“This award was received with great pride and great enthusiasm, in particular, in these very complicated and adverse times that we are going through”, says Joana Madureira.
