Luís Ruano

Luis Ruano is a neurologist at the Entre Douro e Vouga Hospital Centre, researcher at EPIUnit-ISPUP, and assistant professor at University of Porto Medical School.

He was born in 1984 in Bragança. He graduated from medical school in 2008.

In 2012, he obtained his Master of Public Health with the thesis “The Epidemiology of Hereditary ataxias and spastic paraplegias in Portugal”, under the supervision of Prof. Paula Coutinho and Prof. Carolina Silva.

In 2018 he concluded his PhD, with the thesis “Improving the understanding of cognitive impairment: Insights from cross-sectional and longitudinal assessment”, under supervsion of Prof. Nuno Lunet, Prof. Vítor Tedim Cruz and Prof. Maria Pia Amato.

He has published 17 papers in peer-reviewed Internalstional papers and presented 12 oral communications at Internalstional conferences and 20 at Portuguese conferences.

His scientific interest is in understanding and modifying the natural history and the determinants of cognitive deterioration in neurodegenerative diseases and multiple sclerosis. He is currently working in the development of a new computer-based approach for more sensitive and cost effective cognitive testing, allowing for a timely diagnosis and new management strategies for cognitive impairment.
