João Cavaleiro Rufo

João Cavaleiro Rufo is a PhD researcher specialized in the environmental determinants of allergic diseases and asthma. Having studied the effects of several exposure factors, from indoor air quality to the contact with nature, and from microbial diversity to the human volatilome, he completed his PhD in Occupational Health, in 2018, with a Cum Laude distinction awarded by the University of Porto.

He is currently an integrated researcher of the Epidemiology of Allergic Conditions Laboratory at ITR. João is an elected Member of the Epidemiology Workgroup for the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), an association of clinicians, researchers and allied health professionals, dedicated to improving the health of people affected by allergic diseases and asthma, with more than 11,000 members from 124 countries and over 50 National Allergy Societies.

Since 2013, he published over 75 articles in Internalstional peer-reviewed journals currently indexed in Web of Science. He is a Guest Editor of the Internalstional Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, and as recently published the issue Diagnosis and Prevention of Asthma in Children. João is also responsible for the Indoor Air Quality and Public Health Intensive Course at the Institute of Public Health of the University of Porto, where he instructs students about the associations between indoor air parameters and the development of symptoms and diseases.

He is co-founder of the ISPUP’s Office of Support to Intellectual Property and Provision of Services (GAPIS), being currently responsible for supporting the production and commercialization of intellectual property.
